Turkey Gobble Gobble is an annual project that focuses on providing families, who reside in the East Los Angeles area the opportunity to receive and participate in our Nations Tradition of “Thanksgiving”.
Volunteers organize the collection of canned goods, fresh produce, fruits and all the fixings for our families, while VELA partners with local businesses and elected officials to donate Turkeys that would complete a Thanksgiving Dinner. The agency has serviced over 2000 individuals just in the last 3 years alone.
Through this project our volunteers experience the true meaning of giving and it offers them the opportunity to share their talents with the community.
Families are identified by, and VELA Families who attend the ELA Farmers Market were identified to participate in Turkey Gobble Gobble along with local partnering agencies; Garfield High School Healthy Start program, LA County Probation, St. Alphonsus.
The agency receives turkey donations and food baskets from local politicians, such as Los Angeles County First District Supervisor Gloria Molina, Assemblymen Ron Calderon’s Office, Congresswomen Grace Napolitano, Senator Gloria Romero, Care 1st Health Plan and various community members.
Turkeys are typically picked up the day before from various distribution sites and require several volunteers to assist in sorting and packaging of the thanksgiving package for our families.
This project is offers our volunteers to share in the spirit of giving so that others may participate in our Nations Tradition and enjoy a joyful fulfilling meal with their families.
Planning underway for Silver Line station at Patsaouras Transit Plaza
The final design by EE&K Architects evolved from a design charrette held at Metro in March. The challenge was to take the south-facing boundary of the Patsaouras Transit Plaza that edged along the 101 freeway and create a first class transit experience for commuters. The final result is a true gateway that leads commuters along a trellised pedestrian promenade from the plaza, descending into a landscaped, covered and brightly-lit boarding area.
